By Daphne Bowen

There are numerous reasons for which one may where adornments such as necklaces, rings, earrings or bracelets. Some like them simply because they are appealing to their personal tastes or go well with a particular outfit, or as a representation of a treasured event like a marriage. Christian jewelry contains much symbolism of the faith and its teachings.

Religion is filled with icons that are used to symbolize a variety of things that the followers find important, or comforting. Images of the saints, the Ichthus, Bibles, angels, mustard seeds and of course, the cross and crucifix are just s few of the ones more commonly worn. There are a few pieces that are so popular, they are recognized almost instantly for what they represent.

The cross and the crucifix are perhaps the two most iconic symbols of this religion. They are powerful symbols of the sacrifice made by Christ, the salvation he delivered and the promise of an eternal heavenly life, the basis of this doctrine. Usually worn as pendants, they come in an endless combination of sizes, styles and materials and their image is applied to anything from pencils to tee shirts.

Saint medals are very important to Catholics and the members of the denominations that stem from it. These small metal medallions are typically graced with the effigy of one of the canonized with whom the individual feels a particular bond or whose protection they are seeking. They are generally kept on rosaries, worn on chains or pinned to the clothing to keep them close to the heart.

The Rosary is yet another article that is linked primarily to the Catholic church. This string of beads is used as a focusing accessory during prayers and often has a saint's medallion and possibly a crucifix attached to it. Some individuals wear them as necklaces beneath their clothing, while others may wrap them around the wrist in bracelet style or simply carry them inside their pocket as touching them often brings comfort and a sense of peace.

Some bracelets are chosen because they represent valuable reminders such as the steps leading to communion or the pillars of salvation, and are sometimes given as gifts to help people remember these lessons. Others are selected simply because they are appealing accessories that allow an individual to display their faith. Flexible bands of rubber sporting meaningful words or symbols are simple statement pieces that are often passed out in mass to raise awareness.

Rings can stand for many things when it comes to religious symbolization. They may sometimes be presented as commemorations of events such as baptism, first communion or for making the purity commitment. Bands featuring embellishments, etchings, engravings or prints of special emblems are not only pretty to view but also show an individual's spiritual affiliation.

A person may choose rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, lapel pins, anklets, brooches or any of the hundreds of accessorizing options to show the world that they proudly represent their faith. The items might have a very specific purpose or representation attached, or it may simply be something that appeals to the individual. The symbolism may be subtle and personal, or it can be loud and bold depending on the one who opts to wear it.
