6 Questions To Answer When Hiring A Personal Development Coach

By James Gibson

The best coaches produce world class talents and total failures in the same breath. This is usually because of preliminary questions and issues that are not addressed. There are crucial questions you must answer when hiring a personal development coach to ensure that your session is successful and delivers the expected results.

What do you want to achieve at the end of the coaching session? This will be directed by your weaknesses and goals for a particular season. This awareness will also enable you to choose the best trainer. Review the type and quality of skills you need to possess in the near future in order to identify the right person to help you attain such skills. A coaching session without targets will be a waste of time and not add any value to your skills or life.

What is missing in your career, spiritual, social or target aspect of life? As deceptive as this question is, it remains very important. Most people fail to achieve long term goals because they are engrossed in daily struggles. When time to evaluate your medium or long term goals comes, you realize that they could not be achieved. The coaching schedule gives you an opportunity to constantly review your current position in readiness for the next stage in life. You develop strategies that address your current weaknesses in order to achieve strength.

What aspect of my life needs to change? This means enhancing actions and stopping others. It has been revealed that the life of a person would change if he or she began doing or stopped doing just one thing. These are the hindrances that stop you from achieving your goals. Identify that and use the assistance of the trainer to rectify some of the trends.

What is the mark of your achievement? You need awareness that what you targeted in life has been achieved. Always remember that mere coaching will not change you. The role of coaches is to provide directions while you take the actions. Put marks or beacons to indicate progress so that you can change strategy or reinforce it. Without monitoring progress, you will be working aimlessly and thus not achieve much.

What is the previous performance of the coach? This is not an invitation to judge the trainer at a similar level with you. In fact, research indicates that successful coaches were not good players during their days. Success should be measured by reviewing the outcome of the current class. If the class has been successful, it is also likely that you will be successful. If the class failed, the possibility of failure is there. Focus more on the strategies laid and personal relationships when evaluating the potential of a coach.

How will you celebrate the achievement? This is considered by psychologists as one of the most important steps in the process of development. Celebration instills that sense of winning and gives you the oomph to aim for more. It should not be all about working hard. Once you celebrate a particular achievement, you are more motivated to aim higher.

While a personal development trainer has a role to play in your self actualization, most of the work is yours. You have the role of implementing the ideas shared and taking the personal initiative to achieve more. Set goals and work hard towards achieving them. These goals must be realistic and be provided with the resources required to actualize them.
