What Is Expected Of The Armed Guards Orange County Companies Hire

By Jason Williams

There are some people who know exactly what to do in a crisis and aren't afraid to take charge. If this describes you, and you want a career in law enforcement, a security officer job is a good way to start. It is also a good second job or part time employment for law enforcement retirees. The duties required of the armed guards Orange County businesses hire depend on the nature of the companies.

A security guard is traditionally an individual who is employed to patrol property and protect it against theft, vandalism, terrorism, arson, and other illegal activities. Some security personnel carry firearms and others don't. They may guard the entrance to a premise allowing only authorized personnel to pass. A security person might watch closed circuit cameras and monitor alarms installed by the company. If necessary they will detain violators until law enforcement arrives.

A security guard's responsibilities vary greatly depending on the company that employs him. Retail stores hire security to protect their merchandise, cash, and clerks. In the stores they keep an eye out for shoplifters and detain them when necessary. Most schools have security, or courtesy officers, patrolling halls and grounds.

Art galleries and museums have security personnel on staff to guard the galleries and hallways against anyone who tries to get too close, or touch, an artwork. They may be employed to man doorways, checking bags and purses prior to clients entering the premises. All banks have security personnel on site. They assist law enforcement at major sporting and other entertainment events.

Today you will find security everywhere. Local, state, and federal agencies employ them to screen passengers as they board trains, planes, buses, and mass transit. The gaming industry needs security because of the nature of the industry. Guards are often out of sight in observation rooms. There are security officers who are required to spend long hours on their feet, and others who must sit all day monitoring security cameras.

No matter what kind of security the individual is providing, there are common duties that most jobs require. One of these is to be visible. Obvious, and armed, security is a huge deterrent to those contemplating some illegal act. A security guard has to be vigilant at all times. The best guards almost sense when something is not right or out of place. These individuals have to be able to make split second decisions.

Companies want their security personnel to behave aggressively, but appropriately. The individual must be the person who doesn't panic in a dangerous situation. An effective guard understands the limits of his authority and doesn't overstep his bounds. Security guards have to be observant and able to deliver comprehensive, literate incident reports.

Security is an essential part of most businesses. A guard spends most of his time patrolling and observing. It can get tedious at times. When called on though, he has to be ready to jump into action. Responding appropriately can be the difference between a disaster and a crisis averted.
