Illinois is one of the states where divorce cases are growing in number. Access to divorce certificates is also increasing. Requesting for an Illinois divorce record is not a very simple process.

One has to follow several guidelines in order to get a copy of a divorce certificate. Although, a divorce record is a public document, only the involved individuals as well as their immediate family members are allowed to get a copy of the document. In the event that one has to access the records of other people, an authorization letter or a court order has to be presented. The requesting individual has to present information about the divorce record that is being requested to make the search easier and faster. Also, one has to indicate their contact information on the application letter. It will be used for documentation reasons.

As a public document, divorce records do not include all of the details about the separation to respect the privacy of the involved individuals. One can only find the basic details of the separation are indicated on the public file. This includes the names of the divorcees, the place and the date when the couple was granted legal separation. Information such as the reason of the separation is hidden from public access. The agreement about the children and the assets are also kept private to protect the involved individuals.

Divorce records are used in a number of ways by the residents of Illinois. Who would want to marry an individual whose separation is not legal? This is one of the common reasons for asking for a copy of a divorce certificate. Many would wish to conduct a background check on the person they are dating to make sure that the person is really single or legally divorced as he/she claims. This also helps to avoid problems should they plan to get married later. Divorce records are also used in genealogy research. Although, it is one of the least documents used as reference in updating the family tree, it can still affect future generations if it is not updated.

The public records of the state are being managed by the office of the Vital Records Section but one cannot get a certified copy from the said office. The state office manages files since January 1962 and they can help in verifying information only. If certified copies are needed, one has to visit the county clerk office where the divorce was registered. One can also send a mail order but the document can be obtained after a few days thus it is not the fastest method there it. To avoid waiting for days, one can use the Internet to search for the record.

Divorce records public access has been made easy when it is done over the Internet. It has eliminated the need to go to much office since it can be requested even without leaving home. With this, it is far more convenient and faster compared to any other methods available.
