Profiles Of Conservative Candidates Illinois 2014 And Before

By Leslie Ball

Illinois is America's 21st state, having joined the union in December 1818. Its first chief executive and elected governor was a man named Shadrach Bond. Bond was a member of what was then the Independent Party. So far, Illinois is only one of seven states to have elected independent candidates to the governor's mansion. The others have been Alaska, Maine, Minnesota, Oregon, Rhode Island and Texas. Bruce Rauner, elected to the office of governor more recently, is one of several conservative candidates Illinois 2014.

Patrick Joseph Quinn (known to his friends as Pat), assumed the governorship in 2009 to replace then-incumbent Rod Blagojevich, who was removed from office on charges of corruption along with his Chief of Staff, John Harris. He was later sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Prior to becoming governor of the state, Bond served as a representative in Congress for what was then called the Territory of Illinois. In the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, Americans desired unity and had a sense of national purpose. The Federalist Party imploded on itself; with it went the constant conflict between itself and the Democrat-Republican party. Not all historians agree that this was a period of good feelings.

Joe Walsh (no connection to the Eagles' guitarist) is a former Congressman-turned-talk show host. He represented the Illinois Eighth Congressional District, which includes the city of Chicago, for two years from 2011 to 2013. His term was cut short when his district was redrawn and he unsuccessfully ran for representative in the newly formed 14th district. Formerly a self-branded moderate Republican, Walsh is now a member of the ultra-conservative Tea Party and a staunch critic of President Barack Obama.

Influential Alan Keyes has never held public office, although he has made several attempts. He ran for a Senate seat in 1988, 1992, and 2004. He also attempted to become president in 1996, 2000, and 2008. President Ronald Reagan appointed him to serve as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs for two years between 1985 and 1987. He took up talk show hosting for a career change.

Richard Uihlein has never held public office but, as a major donor to conservative causes, he is very influential in conservative politics in the state of Illinois. Fiercely devoted to hanging on to as much of his own money as possible and to protecting everyone's right to do so, he rigorously supports the ultra-conservative Tea Party. He and his missus have their own packaging supply company.

Before Joe Walsh and his predecessor Melissa Bean, Philip Crane held the critical post of representative to the 8th Congressional District, which includes Chicago, from 1969 to 2005, a term of 36 years. In 1990, he ran unsuccessfully for president against Ronald Reagan. He is the son of a physician and college professor, George Washington crane III.

By far the most famous conservative politician was 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, a member of the Whig Party. The Whig Party was formed to oppose President Andrew Jackson and his Democratic policies. He is best known for leading the country through the Civil War, freeing the slaves, preserving the union, modernizing the economy, and strengthening the federal government. Lincoln's term as president was cut short by his assassination in 1865 at the hand of John Wilkes Booth, six days after the surrender of General Robert E. Lee.
