By Lena Stephenson

Experiencing various illnesses is human nature. You will get sick at some point and you have to be treated. Other illnesses are more serious and more severe than others. There are also those that manifest physically. And there are some that does not show anywhere in the physical form but affects the behavior of a certain individual. Psychological disorders are conditions that should not be taken lightly.

One of the most highly recognized therapy is DBT or what is known as dialectical behavior therapy. It is said to be the product of research and considered to be the ultimate therapy method for the behaviorally ill person. DBT in New York City and in other places are highly regarded by many because of the number of people it has helped recover.

Stress is normally one of the things that triggers a sudden change of behavior. If you live in a fast paced environment like that of New York, you will surely understand the pressure that most workers feel every time. Another reason for a change in the mind set of a person is a certain incident that caused trauma to that particular person.

DBT targets those who have personality disorders that usually results to a person wanting to commit suicide. People who have records of suicidal attempts are usually treated with this type of cognitive treatment. It is also said to be used in more personality conditions such as depression and those who are addicted to substances.

DBT have four components that are being used in every patient. All the four components have to be administered so that the therapy would take effect. First would be the group skills training. This is when the patients are being taught about certain skills that can help them survive day to day. Each session, the skills are being reinforced through using various activities as well.

There is also individual counseling. This is when the patient comes face to face with his or her counselor. Through this component, the therapy will become more concentrated on the case of the patient. It will be more personal hence, it will be more effective as well.

There might be times when phone coaching is necessary. The patient will not be detained in a certain facility. They will be allowed to lead a normal life. But if an issue arises, they have to call their counselor to ask for advice regarding the matter. This is to prevent you from doing anything rash that might have grave consequences later.

There are times when therapists consult other therapists so that the case would be discussed thoroughly. There is a consultation team whom the therapists refer to especially if the case is quite difficult. They help the therapist stay focused on the treatment method.

Many things are being taught within the span of on site therapy applications. It teaches the patients to be more aware of their surroundings so that they can react and respond according to the need. It is also teaching individuals to become more tolerant to distress and pain and not try to escape or change the situation. Overall, it tries to help the individual regulate their behavior.
