Why People Hire A Personal Development Coach

By William Hughes

The most basic needs of humans are shelter, food and security. In this modern world millions of people no longer worry about these basic needs and actually have far more than they strictly need. Many people start to wonder about the meaning of life in general and the purpose of their own lives in particular. They do not feel fulfilled and feel as if their is something missing from their lives. In may cases they hire the services of a personal development coach to help them.

Most people that experience a need for a higher level of self actualization do not know how to approach the issue. As a consequence, they may stumble from religious teachings to a wide variety of philosophies, searching for something they cannot clearly define. Others think that they will find happiness and fulfilment in doing community work or by bettering their qualifications. In such cases, coaches can be of great value.

It is important to understand that coaches are not magicians. They cannot teach their clients instant tricks and techniques that will bring about change quickly. They are guides, not teachers that can teach formulae that will deliver instant results. They do not tell their clients what to do or how to do it. They motivate and encourage their clients and they help them to remain focused on the important issues.

Very few people ever take a hard, brutally honest look at themselves and professional coaches know this. Their first priority is therefore to help their clients to examine themselves honestly, warts and all. They know that it is almost impossible to achieve self fulfilment without self knowledge. Clients often find this process of discovering themselves painful, but it is necessary in order to allow for future growth.

It is not good enough to know what the areas of possible improvement are. One needs to set some goals. If there are no goals one would never be able to measure progress. A goal such as a wish to learn more about a certain subject is simply far too vague. The goal should be more precise, stating which subject, and by when one wishes to complete the goal.

People fail to achieve their goals because they become disheartened with their slow progress. That is why good coaches help their clients to break down their goals into small, measurable steps that are easy to achieve. By achieving each little step, the client will realize and be motivated by the fact that he is indeed making progress towards the achievement of the bigger goal.

It is vital that coaches and their clients maintain a close and trusting relationship. If this is not the case the client will not be completely honest with the mentor. The client must know that the mentor will treat their sessions confidentially. Top coaches often refer their clients to colleagues if they realize that a specific client will form a closer bond with someone else.

It is only natural for people to discover meaning and to feel self fulfilled. People that are happy and content are more productive and they can make a real contribution to society. Coaches can play a valuable role in helping people discover themselves and to grow in those areas that will lead to higher levels of self actualization.
