Although, it should be noted that life coaching differs from mentoring as the focus is placed on setting and reaching realistic goals.

The term was first used as Oxford University slang in 1830 referring to a trainer or tutor whom helped a student during an exam. As a result, the term coaching now refers to taking any individual from present experiences to where the individual wants to be in the future. For, while groups such as the human potential movement, laws of attraction, positive thinking, large-group awareness, leadership studies and est still exist, most are expensive and time consuming.

Most coaches use a set of communication skills to teach clients how to better handle thoughts and actions. In the process, individuals often learn how to think in the moment which can often create better outcomes to different scenarios. After which, the individual learns how to achieve goals and fulfill desires on an ongoing basis.

Sometimes known as a meta-profession, coaching can apply to supporting clients in endeavors ranging from spirituality and political to personal and professional issues. In addition, coaching approaches and techniques are often influenced by cultural norms and values. As such, while one type of coaching may be accepted in the United States, the same coaching techniques may differ in other countries or cultures.

ADHD coaching is a specialized aspect in which individuals with the condition can learn how to better manage life and symptoms. In fact, J. Ratey and Edward Hallowell have written a book on ADHD called Driven to Distraction which outlines how this type of coaching can be beneficial to individuals suffering from ADHD and similar conditions.

ADHD coaches do not provide professional counseling, therapy or treatment, merely advice and assistance. For, the focus is on the individual learning how to handle routine chores and calm behavioral issues while setting and achieving goals. While this is the case, if the individual is not under the care of a health care provider and does not respond to coaching, it is important to recommend the individual seek help from a mental or health care professional.

When it comes to being a life coach, some countries require certification or licensing while others do not. In addition, practices and principles can often vary between different coaching organizations. Whereas, while coaches working one-on-one with individuals are often known as life coaches, those working in the corporate sector with different businesses are often referred to as consultants.
