By Ida Dorsey

Any couple who manages to stay happily married for 25 years and more sets a wonderful example to their kids and friends and they deserve a celebration. Especially in today's times when divorce is an everyday phenomenon, a 25th wedding anniversary is a special and happy event. Sharing one's love and joy with family and friends is one thing, but the planning of an official celebration can be taxing. Thankfully there are experts in every field and you can leave your 25th wedding anniversary invitations to the pro's.

The idea of celebrating a wedding anniversary comes a long way. It dates back to the days of the Holy Roman Empire, when husbands demonstrated their appreciation and love for their wives by crowning them with a silver wreath on their 25 wedding anniversary and a gold one on their 50th. Like with everything, this noble tradition soon became commercialized and today there is a specific symbol or gift for each year of marriage.

Romantic couples can expect gifts symbolizing the number of years they have been married on their anniversary parties. The most common internationally accepted symbols for modern day wedding anniversaries are wood, tin, crystal, china, silver, pearl, ruby, gold and diamond.

It is, of course, not every couple that wants to celebrate their wedding date or who believes in such commercialized traditions. It goes without saying that unhappy couples would probably not even bother to remember their wedding date, never mind celebrating it! However, most people still want to believe in love and romance, and happily married couples with a sense of romance love to celebrate their anniversaries with their loved ones.

Silver anniversary celebrations come in any shape and size, depending on the couple's personal preference. It can be an informal do for family and close friends only, or it can be a lavish gala-event for selected guests. The detailed planning in itself can be overwhelming and couples often underestimate the importance of stylish invitations being sent out timeously. It's no use planning a wonderful event, but only a few guests turn up because the invitations were sent too late.

An anniversary invitation should not only be stylish and professional, it should also reflect the nature of the event and the personalities of the couple. It can be formal, informal and even have a touch of humor, but it must still be professional and stylish to show respect. Even if you plan an outdoor, informal barbeque, the invitations need not look tatty and unprofessional.

However, a silver wedding anniversary calls for some stylish, personalized and professional invitations as it is aimed at adult, loved family members and friends. It can be formal, informal, colorful or elegant. The shape, style, paper, font and wording should reflect the senders message clearly.

The traditional appreciation for a long, happy marriage is still apparent today in the practices of some commonwealth countries. Couples who manage to stay alive and married for 50 years and longer, can arrange to receive a personal blessing from the monarch or other state dignitaries on their 60th, 65th, 70th and subsequent wedding anniversaries. They simply have to apply to Buckingham Palace in the UK, or to the Governor-General's office in the Commonwealth country where they live.
