In Christianity, the belief in prophecy is founded on the Bible, especially in the New Testament. Christians believe that it is a spiritual gift that is induced by the dwelling of the Hilly Spirit in a person. They, therefore, hold to the fact that it is a supernatural ability `to receive and convey messages supposedly from their God. In addition, Christians believe that such messages are meant for edification, extortion as well as the comfort of its members.

Muslims, on the other hand, believe that their holy book, the Quran gave predictions of a number of events prior to their happening. They, therefore, believe that the prophecies prove the divinity in the origin of their holy book. In addition, Muslims usually recognize the authenticity of prophecies in some other sacred texts including the Bible. Nevertheless, they have the belief that over the years, certain sections of the Bible have become corrupted; hence not every verse and prophecy is accurate.

Judaism, nonetheless, attribute prophesies as the warnings conditioned by God and captured in the Torah and outline the outcomes when the leaders, as well as the societies and communities, fail to adhere to instructions outlined within the Torah. Prophecies are also suggested to encompass promises on blessing when obedience to the laws by the Judaism god is upheld. Native Americans also believe in a number of prophecies but they are reliant on traditions that are majorly oral. Being based on traditions that were not documented most people cannot believe in such prophecies. The non-believers do not verify prophecies; they believe that they are natural happenings.

The argument of skeptics is that a number of prophecies are actually invented. This is subsequent to the matching of facts to various circumstances. This notion is actually supported by the fact that most outcomes of prophecies become altered on the basis of the attachments and desires of seers of the prophecies.

Psychologists have never found any connection between prophecies and the human psychology. Most of the psychiatrists and neurologists believe the prophecy phenomenon is based on what people feel and there are no factual findings to support that the events actually happen. According to specialists, there is no evidence and the whole thing is about perceptions. The prophecies issue is mystical.
