Important Every Day Items You Should Always Have On You

By Rob Fain

You make sure you have your wallet or purse and keys when you leave the house every morning but what else do you carry. Do you have a knife, screwdriver, scissors, and emergency rope and do you have the means to obtain a food source or even protect yourself with what you have on you. Everyday carry items if chosen carefully can help you through various situations you may find yourself in to include protecting yourself and even surviving if you become lost or stranded.

You do not want to carry an extra briefcase or purse so any items you carry must fit in your pockets, clip on your belt or even can be worn around your neck. Neck chains can be a choke hazard so ensure the chain is designed to break away when worn around the neck. Wearing a quality belt is important not only to attach items to but also the belt can be used for other things as well such as an emergency tourniquet.

One of the more important tools you can carry is a multi-purpose knife. Pliers, wire cutters, and scissors can be helpful in many situations, from car repairs to shelter building. Some models have a small saw bladed that can be used to saw through heavy cordage, or even plastic hand restraints if you find yourself in that situation.

Rope bracelets are very common today and many people call them survival bracelets because in a survival situation you can use the cordage to build shelters, fish and make repairs to gear or clothing. One paracord bracelet can provide between 6 and 10 feet and if you feel you would need more you can purchase a bigger bracelet or wear two. Paracord is unique in that it can be broken down into multiple strands for sewing or fishing line while still maintaining a sturdy core.

Having the means to start a fire can save your life. You may need to signal emergency responders or need a fire for warmth if your car breaks down in the wintertime along a deserted stretch of road. Magnesium sticks along with flint sticks or rods can be used to ignite tinder in practically any situation.

From survival manuals and listening to experts, you realize that fishing is the quickest way to obtain food, but you do not want to carry fishing tackle around with you on a daily basis. Fishing tackle can be made from various items, and one way to make a hook for emergency fishing is by using a paperclip. They can be carried on a key or neck chain and you can use your 550 paracord as fishing line. Paperclips are thin enough that for larger fish you can twist the pieces together using pliers, and then bend and shape into a hook. Sharpen the ends and use as an emergency sewing needle as well.

Carry your cell phone everywhere you go, not only for emergency calls but they can be used to help find you if you become trapped or otherwise incapacitated. Make sure your phone has its GPS tracking enabled and some phones even have a navigational tool that can help you find your way. Use the lighted screen as an emergency flashlight or carry a small penlight on your key or neck chain.

Personal protection is important and while you may not want to carry a firearm, a whistle or pepper spray can drive off an attacker in many cases. Stun guns are another option and some models are designed to look like everyday items, and can be clipped to a purse or belt. There are some brands of pepper spray designed for carrying on a key or neck chain.
