Running An Army Surplus Store

By Ladonna Chambers

For many people, military items have a certain appeal and finding the right equipment can often be a challenge and a hobby. Shopping at the Army Surplus stores are often fun to do as well because the things that they sell can often be things that you might not see anywhere else and not find in a long while if you didn't just see it.

People may wonder why you can make a better profit with these items versus other so-called normal items but it is simple. When you open a normal store, say a liquor store or a toy store. Everything that you buy to make up your inventory is bought from a supplier and it is bought brand new. That is because no one who shops at these places is in the market for used items.

The first thing anybody who is going to have a shop needs is space. If you are going to get into the Army Surplus business you might need a lot of it. The items that you can purchase from government auctions and surplus sales are amazing and most people would never imagine that it would be possible to own some of these things.

Vehicles are a great find at these sales as well. They are usually in serviceable condition and if not they might only need tires or a battery in some cases. Not too bad for something that you can buy at way below market value. That is especially enticing to people at the sales because they know they can resell the equipment at a huge mark up and make a great profit.

Some people who are in this business will often make sure that they have a empty lot or a large garage to store the items they buy. They also get rid of various regular supplies and equipment too. Things like office chairs, stationary, desks, pens, and printers. The military uses many of the same things used in the civilian world.

You can find desks, printers, tools, stationary, ink for printers, office chairs, file cabinets and more. The list is literally almost endless in what you can acquire at these auctions. That does not even include the things that they consider "not fit for military use". Things like old weapon repair tools and various items from the motor pool.

You can find things that you are looking for at a discount and even if the owner has not taken the time to repair the item, you might be able to get it even cheaper at that point. You could always turn around and repair it and make it good as new. Even if you purchase something like an old ammo box, you could use it for a storage box instead.

People who run an Army Surplus store can often make a decent living. But just like running any type of store those who own them will work long hours and most holidays. It is often worth it however for the satisfaction of knowing that you are your own boss and making your own rules and living. This is why most people get into this business.
