Understanding Spiritual Principles Teachers Teach

By Paul Wood

When it comes to spirituality and religion, the two often go hand in hand. There are others who believe spirituality is not religion nor religion spirituality. Keeping that in mind, it is important to understand what Spiritual Principles Teachers teach.

For the most part, these principles are lessons which spiritual gurus and others teach individuals to live in every day life. Generally, the teacher also known as a mentor or guide helps people gain an understanding, skills and knowledge associated with a spiritual path or paths. In addition, the mentor nurtures the individual so that one can awaken to an individual understanding of spirituality.

When it comes to gratitude, it is important to recognize that life here on earth is a gift. As such, it is important to never take anything for granted. Rather, we need to give thanks for all the blessings that have been bestowed in whichever manner is appropriate according to personal beliefs. In doing so, we can eliminate negative thoughts and behaviors and become more aware of all the positives in life.

While humility is often quite misunderstood, it is a principle which needs to be honored and accepted. For, it is an everyday human experience. As such, being humble does not refer to being below other human beings but rather remaining neutral and humble and difficult situations. Thus, allowing oneself to let go of issues rather than reacting to same in a heated moment when we might rather feel the need to become bigger or better than others.

When it comes to an Advaita or Non-dual Teacher, the individual is often pointing the individual to the essential qualities found in the student's own true nature. In most cases, these qualities include emptiness, oneness and awareness. In addition, the mentor also teaches that everyone and everything is of One existence.

In metaphysical circles, these lessons might indicate that teacher and student are one. Whereas, in spirituality most concepts are relative to a specific belief system. As a result, while there appears to be a student and teacher, the reality is only a temporary phenomenon of a future reality, at least in the mind of the mentor.

As such, a mentor operates on a level that is relative in the moment. For, once the student has become aware of the true nature of oneself, then the teacher has become a part of the student, thus the two have become one. Whether a quirk, or way of speaking, all in all in the end all are one and one are all according to most spiritual mentors and guides.

Ultimately, there are practices and principles which different mentors, guides and teachers focus on when working with students. Most often, becoming self-aware is the primary goal. Beyond that, each has a distinct method and list of principles based on whatever path or paths one may be teaching at the time. It is generally up to the student to determine whether or not these principles and practices are something that will improve the quality of life over time.
