Practical Tips For Common Drainage Problems

By Michelle Howe

Problems with the drainage systems may cause significant damages to your houses and properties. Therefore, any Walnut Creek drainage problems must be resolved in a timely manner before it gets worse. Nip the problem in the bud by properly identifying every part of the system. This helps you distinguish the issues as soon as it arises. It is prudent to create a map that points out the system features and surfaces in the property in details.

In addition, you can create structures that can help divert water flows away from your home. This can significantly reduce the potential risks that it poses to your properties. The following are some of the structures that you can install. Although you do not need all of them, installing even just one of the solutions can make a huge difference.

A foundation drain helps divert the water in safe distances from the property's foundation. Drainpipes in the structure's foundations are perforated, so the water flows out steadily. Gravels are placed around the pipes to prevent larger deposits from clogging the pipes. A layer of thin fabric may also be used in filtering the sediments and debris.

The roof drainpipe follows the same principle. It also diverts the water away from concentrating to a single point. However, it is intended to protect the roof rather than the structure's foundation. This is not perforated either. The pipes are directly connected to the city's drainage system, a water body or a dry well. There is also another variant of this device, the storm drainpipes. These are made from different materials, such as concrete, polyvinyl chloride or aluminum.

On the other hand, the gutters are designed to collect the runoffs coming from the roof. When rainwater stacks up, it may cause water damage to the windows, roof and walls. Downspouts are used as passage for the water. Unfortunately, larger debris may block the natural flow, which leads to various complications. To prevent this, the gutters filter the leaves and other rubble.

Another effective way to prevent clogs is by setting up catch basins. These devices are connected to the drainpipes and are intended to seize the debris that may jam the pipe. After the larger debris have been filtered, it would be much easier to clean the drain system. Using a rake or broom, you can remove the leaves and other rubble caught in the basin's grate.

Like the catch basins, yard inlets are connected to the piping system as well. It has similar functions, too. The only difference is that it is much smaller in size and is installed right away. There are plastic and metal yard inlet available in local hardware stores. Professionals can install the devices but you can also install them, yourself.

Setting up cleanouts in strategic areas make it easier to clean up the drainage systems, too. These are easy access points when cleaning the pipelines. They are usually located in bends where the scraps are more likely to clog the system. By gaining access to such areas that could have been difficult to reach, you can clean the entire system more thoroughly.

Finally, sump pumps can be installed to protect the property from water damage. In the event that the Walnut Creek drainage fails, the waters are expected to converge in the lowest sections of the house. Before it can cause considerable damages, the water has to be pumped out. Since the sump pumps require electricity in order to function, these are ideal backup systems.
