Many individuals ask themselves what it takes to succeed in this profession. Do not assume that it is simply journalism because most of the time you will be doing more investigation that reporting. You must also be able to identify stories that will sell and also make a difference in society. Large corporations are normally the main targets because they are prone to breaking the law and covering up their ills. Gain some experience. No one is going to hire an investigative journalist who does not have a portfolio. You need to prove that you have what it takes to provide quality, reliable and authentic stories. You can do this by writing for a local paper or even taking an internship at your school.

Choose one area to specialize in. You must decide on a niche. You can choose to focus on war related issues, environmental protection, social crimes and so on. This will help you accumulate skills and build a reliable team of sources.

Build your integrity. Whistle blowers will only come to you if you are trustworthy. Therefore, build a reputation based on trust and honesty.
