By Paul Long

Competition in the global markets is extremely fierce. There are many companies that sells excellent products and services but that nevertheless struggle to thrive. Those businesses that lead the pack are the ones that not only sell quality products and services, but that remain innovative and that embrace change. This requires excellent leadership at all levels of the business. By implementing executive coaching Puerto Rico companies have found that they are better able to compete in the global arena.

There have been many studies that focus on the top performing companies. One common denominator is that they all have extraordinary leaders at the helm. These leaders inspire their employees and their clients, they lead by example and they seem to have endless supplies of energy and enthusiasm. Such leaders are, in fact, often the biggest asset any company can possibly have.

Contrary to popular believe, great leadership is not an accident of birth. Leadership is nurtured and directed. Really great leaders continually strive to learn and to grow both personally and professionally. They listen to other people and they are quick to admit when they are wrong. When leadership potential is discovered, many companies appoint coaches to help potential leaders to grow and to develop the skills great leaders need. Such companies see the cost of this coaching as an investment in.

Coaches are hired for many different reasons. Some companies use them to help promising leaders to grow and to develop. In many cases they are required to help leaders to cope with change and to even initiate change. They can play an important role in helping long time managers to avoid the dangers of stagnation. Stagnation can be the death knell of any company in a fiercely competitive environment.

Other companies hire coaches because they know that their managers need somebody that can act as an independent and objective sounding board. These coaches often play the role of devils advocate. They listen to the ideas and inspirations of their clients and help them to clarify their thoughts by asking questions. This helps managers to develop balanced and realistic objectives.

Another very important function of coaches is to help leaders with great potential to overcome potentially fatal flaws. Some people are racist, or sexist. Others communicate very poorly. Yet others do not even realize that they are exhibiting bully behaviour. In such cases a coach can help them to admit to the problem and to implement strategies that will bring about a change in the behaviour of the manager.

There are numerous people advertising their services as coaches. Potential employers should be very careful when vetting candidates. A proven track record and valid references are essential. Candidates should also submit formal proposals that detail the program the plan to follow in order to satisfy the needs of the client.

Top coaches charge hefty fees, but if they help their clients to achieve their goals they are generally worth every penny that they are paid. They are often successful because they are not personally involved with their clients. They are objective and the focus solely upon the needs of the client.
