Struggles Of The Homelessness In Georgia

By Ann Sullivan

May it be due to circumstances or being born into it, vagrancy is a situation nobody would wish to be in. Though there are many definitions of homelessness, being Homelessness in Georgia to most in the society is lacking a roof over your head and a place to call home.

Due to the hardships of the economy and lack of capital to keep up with it, most people fall into poverty, and this leads to homelessness making poverty the number one cause of vagrancy. There are also other reasons that may lead to someone finding themselves in this state, such as being born into a homeless family.

There are many impacts of vagrancy on people. They affect both an individual and families at large. They bring about health problems, difficulty maintaining jobs, affect the mental health of the affected, bring about family separation and divorce and many more. These problems may be short-term or may leave a scar that follows them through generations.

As it is with human nature, most homeless people want to work and be self reliant. But there are numerous blocks towards achieving their goals. To some, it is the lack of proper education. To others, it is just the stigma of being some social outcast. This leaves their dreams shattered and their hope dissipated. With time, they give up and start living life as it comes turning to drugs or crime to handle life.

Although they do offer shelter for the night, homeless shelters are not able to solve the problems that cause the state of vagrancy. They are pretty much. The last resort available to people who no longer have a roof. If homeless people had support from their community and enough resources for medical care, mental health care, recovery from substance abuse, and criminal rehabilitation, Georgia would probably see a dramatic drop in the number of homeless people.

But these shelters tend to be often overcrowded, and as results, the socials amenities becomes the issue to the people in this places. This is because, in the bid to help as many people as possible, the shelters accommodate more than the capacity. This will often lead to insufficient resources and a shortage in even the basic commodities such as food, water, clothing and medical supplies.

And as expected, overcrowding brings with it many problems. Diseases start to emerge among those living in these shelters. Insecurity becomes a threat mainly because most of the time there is rampage for the inadequate resources being provided leading to fights. Poor level of cleanliness also brings about pests like lice and bedbugs. Thus turning what was thought to be a haven for them to a risk and hazardous for their well-being.

However, there are those in the community who refuse to give up on the less fortunate and the homeless in the society. They have taken it upon themselves to see that they can help out in any way possible and bring these people back to their feet so that they can be self-dependent once again.
