Am I A Hoarder With OCD?

By Maria Wright

There are a lot of people who like to hoard stuff simply because of habit or because they are just plain messy. However, there are some people who are compulsive hoarders. This is actually a form of obsessive compulsive disorder and one of the main causes as to why they do not get any cleaning done. For those who are asking themselves the question Am I a hoarder, check out these signs.

In order to know whether one has an OCD, the first thing to do is determine whether one has trouble letting go of stuff. It is one thing to be lazy and just ignore those worthless things, but it is another story when one cannot seem to let go. If one keeps on finding some excuse to keep stuff that has no value, then it is a possible sign.

If one would just take a step and look at his or her house, he or she will be able to know if he or she has a problem or not. Once he or she sees that his or her house has a lot of piled of stuff like furniture, carton boxes and a lot of weird collectibles, it could be a sign. It also confirms the sign if he or she doesn't have much room to move around.

Now, if one does not mind throwing out stuff that does not belong to him or her then it is also another sign. Usually, people with the hoarding OCD will only have trouble getting rid of their own things. But if one is very particular with his or her own things and not at all particular with others, then it is another indication.

If one also sees that his or her house has become rather unsanitary to the point that weird things are starting to grow, then it is yet another very unhealthy sign. Observe for things such as molds, mildew, or probably even mushrooms growing in some parts of the rooms. This is definitely a big sign that should not be ignored at all.

People who have this sort of disorder also tend to be very defensive when confronted or scolded about it too. For those who happen to feel more irritable when being confronted about the whole hoarding habit, then they might actually be a compulsive hoarder. If one notices that he or she exhibits this behavior, then it is time to take some action on it.

Of course, this irritable and defensive behavior would eventually lead to social isolation. If a person feels like he or she wants to be alone with his or her stuff most of the time, then it could be a tell tale sign of a hoarding OCD. He or she will especially notice this if his or her friends would point it out.

For those who are already noticing some signs such as these, then it might be high time to seek help. Fortunately, there are many ways to be able to treat this type of disorder with therapy being one of them. It is better to just nip it in the bud rather than let it be and slowly progress into something worse.
