The Mystery Of The Secret Chambers Of The Great Pyramid

By Janine Hughes

The largest and oldest man made structure in Giza and the whole of Egypt is the Great Pyramid of Giza. It is the oldest and the only surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World built as a burial site for Pharaoh Khufu. Word is that there could secret chambers of the Great Pyramid, which are believed to have the remains of Pharaoh since his remains have not been discovered yet.

To start with, only three Chambers are already known to the world. The first two are on the upper side and are informally referred to as the Kings and the Queens Chamber respectively. The other one is called the base and serves as support for the rest of this giant structure. Two tunnels blocked by stone doors arise from the Queens section and its said that the tunnels probably lead to a secret chamber.

There are four shafts that adorn the Great Pyramid. Two of them extend from the Kings Chambers as the other two from the Queens. Those that extends from the Kings section open to the external side of this chamber while those from the Queens section; no one can surely testify where they open. The fact that all other pyramids lack shafts make it difficult to solve this mysterious riddling architectural puzzle.

Robots have been instrumental to pyramid explorers in trying to understand the magnificent structures. Exploration was first done in 1992 when a robot entered the Southern shaft in the Queens section. After ascending 200 feet, it discovered and took pictures of a secret door with two handles made of copper. This was not expected as such doors with copper handles have not been found in other Egyptian pyramids.

What lay behind the door is only a matter of speculation. To some, it is the secret chamber with the remains of Pharaoh. For others, the doors were built to confuse anyone dumb enough to try stealing Khufus treasures. Still others claim that the solution to the puzzle that is the mystery doors reveals the exact resting place of Khufus remains and his treasures.

In 2002, a newly developed robot drilled a hole on the door found by the previous robot along the Southern shaft. A camera inserted showed another door, this one was 20 centimeters from the first. This was truly mysterious considering there are no other pyramids with doors. Also, the shafts in the Kings section do not have any hidden doors.

More exploration went on in 2014, this time in the Kings section. Hieroglyphs in red paint and carvings made in stone believed to be 4, 500 years old were discovered by the robot. It is believed that the two were made when the chambers were in construction and therefore if their message was deciphered, we would gain a deeper understanding into the shaft purpose and construction.

It is the tallest and oldest structure on the planet before us and is magnificent in every sense of this world. But we are yet to understand it, know why it was built and solve all its mysteries. We hope in time and with advanced technology, we are able to do that.
