Prominent Naples Psychologist Helps Create Solutions For Depression

By Jay Dy

The term depression, when used in everyday conversation, can mean anything from occasional sadness to being too lazy to get out of bed. As a Naples psychologist would explain, this is not clinical depression. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, a reference book psychologists use defines the symptoms.

There is a list of symptoms and the individual must exhibit five or more to be considered clinically depressed. These symptoms must last for two weeks or longer. Some of the symptoms are gaining or losing a significant amount of body weight, being disinterested in hobbies or work and an all-encompassing sadness.

For the two week or longer period of time these symptoms must have a serious affect on the individual and how he conducts his daily life. It is rare for one person to have all the symptoms on the list. For example he may have either lost or gained a significant amount of weight, but not done both.

The patient who meets the criteria will have no interest in most of the activities he enjoyed previously. He will feel a deep and lingering sadness, usually for most of his waking hours. He will be abnormally tired on most days.

When someone has what is called suicidal ideation, emergency intervention may be needed to prevent him from harming himself. He may feel that since he cannot see a way to escape the overwhelming sadness, suicide is the only escape.

At that level of severity, the individual will not be able to either go to work or attend classes if a student. His normal routine will be abruptly abandoned. The CEO may be incapable of running his company and the secretary be unable to type letters on the computer. The clinical depressive disorder is disabling.

When a loved one dies and the family is depressed, it is a different situation. The Naples psychologist is someone the individual can turn to for help. He will approach the two in different ways.
