Haiti Mission Disaster Management Bringing Back Hope Inhabitants

By Amanda Bean

Haiti is a small country located within the regions of the Caribbean and it shares Hispaniola Island with the Santo Domingo Republic. The country is famous for its poverty state in the western region because a larger number of its population earns less than $1USD a day. Perhaps this could be because of the regular earth tremors, which many Haiti Mission disaster management crew are trying their best to control.

The disaster that hit this country was one of the most dangerous kinds ever reported in its entire history. It actually led to the loss of many lives and the destruction of valuable property. What makes it even worst is that the fatalities that took place happened within a very small, precisely within 100KM within the region of Port-au-Prince, killing about twenty-five percent of the entire population in this region.

Most of the international bodies like the Government of the United States, the United Nation UNEP, the Red Cross troops, European Commissions and many other governmental and non-governmental organizations took part in addressing the problems that these people faced. The dangerous and terrific earth tremor that took place in this state left so many people hopeless and homeless as well. Most of the representatives therefore who came to this state had an intention of addressing the material and social needs of people affected by this problem.

The team was helpful in a great way, they helped people by sharing food with them as well as enough water to drink on a regular basis. They provided temporary shelter for protection during the renovation process. Again, the team was helpful because it emphasized on the need for proper hygiene among the inhabitants of Haiti.

The UNEP initiated a program in this country that would see the people becoming economically stable. Through the HRI, the vulnerability of disasters and poverty in the country would reduce. The plan seeks to restore the ecosystem of the country and improve the lives of the people through effective management of natural resources.

When the disaster took place, it left a lot of debris that needed proper management. All the debris required proper collection, sorting, appropriate treatment type and effective disposals. This act alone made the management team an ideal part in disaster control. There are many non-governmental organization that help by taking part in the activity.

The debris most collected came from residential and business buildings and the sites where constructions took place. Reinforced concrete and the hollow bricks were the debris collected in bulk. A program was put in place to help with the collection of reusable hollowed bricks. In addition, the people living in this region were to take an initiative to gather all the bars as scrap irons.

There is a need to prevent high magnitudes like these in future but to realize this, the Haiti mission crew dealing with disaster management must be ready to ask and answer tough and deep questions about the country. The possibility of another danger, of course of a huge magnitude, in this state may take place at any time and cause many deaths, perhaps more in figure than what is already lost. People in authority should know the actual step to take to save people and the resources of the country.
