5 Strategies to Concentrate and Get Back on Task

By Hal Neff

Every day, there are a large number of duties which are calling your name, both at the office and in your own life. With life being so stressful it's easy to lose focus on the big picture.

Just how many times have you gone to bed asking yourself what you really accomplished that day? Or have you ever felt like your day was in some way wasted?

To avoid these feelings, you can try out a few different ways to get yourself back on the right track. Instead of bemoaning your wasted time, resolve to regain your focus and get back on task.

Confucius States...

There's a famous quote about focus by the great philosopher Confucius: "If you chase two rabbits, you catch none. " True, there might be those who are able to multitask and do it relatively well; but more often than not, individuals who split their attention between two different tasks have a more challenging time finishing both tasks properly.

Listed here are five strategies to regain your own focus and get back on task:

1 . Get rid of the distractions. Eliminate the barriers that are leading you to avoid getting things done - it's that simple! Forget about checking email every 5 minutes; those emails are still going to be there when you finish your task. Make a checklist of distractions and eliminate!

* Turn off the phone and let the voice mail take over.

* Shut the blinds in your workplace.

* Turn off the background music when you find yourself singing more than working.

* Simply closing the door to your workplace can give you more privacy and more concentration.

2 . Prioritize your work. Rather than working on projects all together, take one task at a time, concentrate on it, and worry about all the other projects later. Ultimately, you will get a lot more done and you'll finish it faster. You'll also be recognized by the superior quality that you deliver when you're free from interruptions.

* Find a way to prioritize that works effectively for you. Select either the assignment that has the earliest due date or the one with the least components so that you can complete it swiftly and get it out of the way. There are pros and cons to both systems so tackle it whichever way works for you.

3. Tell everybody to respect your time. There are several nice and respectful ways to ask people to back off. If you are seeing yourself in a time crunch and cannot seem to escape from other people, think about letting them realize that you need time to finish some crucial duties. There are a lot of different ways to do it - just be sure you do!

* Set times that you're going to accept telephone calls and even visitors. Advise them to contact you by email and then set a regular time to check your email.

* Set business hours during which people can count on you to return their calls or emails.

4. Set several restrictions with your internet access. The web is wonderful but it can be a big time waster, especially if you work at a computer all day long. Regain your focus with some self-made rules.

*Initially, minimize all those windows you're not using. Stay away from Facebook, MySpace or Twitter, stop searching on eBay, and leave messenger alone!

* Set up specific schedules each day to use these fun stuff and just focus on what you have to do. You will immediately achieve more!

5. Trust your capabilities. This may seem like a really tiny thing when it comes to focusing and getting back on task, but trusting that you can get anything done that you set out to do sets you in a positive perspective and you'll be less distracted with stress and worry.

* Have confidence that you can finish each job with ease and believe in your capability to produce. If you will just have the confidence, you are sure to have the concentration!

Now that you have been introduced to 5 techniques to focus and get back on task, it is up to you to take action and learn how to focus your thoughts. If you have got to get things completed, follow these tips so you can put yourself - and your goals - first!
