Ohio Public Divorce Records

By Ben Kingsley

If you want to locate the files of a Divorce in Ohio, you can place a request at the Ohio Health Department. Files of divorce cases that occurred from the year 1954 up to the present date are stored at their office. But although they keep divorce files, they do not have the power to provide divorce decrees to the public because only a county Clerk of Court can do so. For instance, you do not know which county the files can be located, you can ask for help from the Health Department.

The Health Department has an official website where they keep soft copies of public documents, including divorce documents, which they regularly update. There you can find a request form that you can download. You have to complete all the required fields on the form before you submit it back to the department. Failure to appropriately complete the form will result to your request to be rejected. There are certain requirements that you need to comply to get divorce documents. They will depend on which county you will be requesting them. There are also certain fees that you will be charged with. All fees are to be paid only by money order or by check. In case no document is found, no refund will be issued.

Divorce documents serve as a proof of the official end of a marriage. If a man or a woman has gone through divorce in the past, a divorce document must be presented if he or she wishes to marry again in the future. They can also be used in the division of assets and liabilities, claiming of properties, child custody arrangements, and others.

To commence a search, you must provide the full name of the owner of the divorce records you want to request for. Bear in mind that transactions in government agencies are usually lengthy. If you can supply more details about the owner of the records, the retrieval process will be a lot quicker.

If you are looking for another source where you can retrieve the records, there are certain online search tools that cater to supplying public records, including divorce records, to people. They have the consent of the court to do what they do, so you do not have to worry about having troubles with the law. But before you decide which search tool to use, do a little research on their background so that you know if they can be trusted or not. Try to look for what comments other people have on certain search tools.

The public has the right to access public records. But Are Divorce Records Public? Of course, they are because they are deemed as part of public records. Despite the freedom to access divorce records, it is strictly prohibited by the government to wrongly use them. Anyone that is caught violating will be punished accordingly by the court. Also, if the records that you request for are not your own, you will not be able to view some details about it, specifically those that are deemed as confidential. Instead, you will be given a verification that will prove the validity of a divorce. Confidential details are not disclosed to the public so as to preserve the right to privacy of the owners of the records.
