Crazy Italian Wedding Traditions Revealed By Priscila Siano

By Priscila Siano

When you think of Italy, it's impossible not to think of romance.

From the moment you hear the word Italy, it's thoughts of the Italian Riviera, Venice, Rome and of course romance. But have you ever considered having an Italian marriage or even dating in Italy?

It's natural for many people to visit the country with their loved ones or alone in the hope of finding love. Just as you do with any international city that you plan to visit for a wedding, getting to know local wedding traditions can help you make a good impression.

If your single what about dating at the wedding?

It may sound exciting depending on what your goals are. Even though, Italians are known for their love of romance they're still conservative when it comes time to settling down.

Like many other parts of the world Italians look at the whole package when it comes to deciding on a partner.

Italian traditions dictate that men should be financially stable, successful and grounded. One thing women should be aware of; Italian men are mommas boys. Beware being involved means getting involved with Momma too.

For women dating Italian men a clear distinction between; whether they are planning on a casual affair (sex is emotional and fun) or something more permanent (like being a good wife and mom)has to be made. How you approach a man and discern his feelings will depend a lot on this. Ultimately in his eyes you'll either be a good girl or a bad girl!

For Men - Italian women have certain demands. They want to be cherished, they want to be held, they want you to take care of them. That means financially and otherwise. Your emotions will have to shine through. You have to love her as if no one else exists in the world. You'll be grilled and checked out by her family too.

It goes without saying you'll need to turn on the charm. Italian women love to be told just how beautiful they are. So prepare to tell them early and often :-) If you're a stoic kind of guy who plays it close to the vest don't bother. Italian women want a nice open, emotionally connected man.

You'd think with all the exposure to today's values that the traditions of the past would be disappearing. That's certainly not the case.

Weddings - Italian wedding traditions are many, and these are often based on the region you're in.

For example, in Veneto it is part of the Italian marriage traditions that before the wedding the couple has to walk to the church or chapel they are getting married in.

In some places, the families or the folks around the church place obstacles along the way to the church and see how the couple will react to each one of the obstacles. It's said it determines how they will deal with issues in their married life.

The unique traditions that have held on over generations are things like the groom carrying a piece of iron somewhere in their suit to prevent evil spirits from attending the wedding and creating havoc. One of my favorites is the bride covering her face with a silk veil to prevent some of these jealous evil spirits from disrupting the wedding ceremony. And if the veil gets damaged (like a small tear) that will bring bad luck on to the couple for the rest of their married lives. Some brides have spare just in case.

These customs are still followed today. Even the ones that frown upon getting married during lent or during the time of the Advent... But if your planning the big day, Sunday is considered the best day of the week for the ceremony.

Pomp, circumstance, tradition, and then PARTY! Occasionally the celebration can go on for days. It all starts with the wedding early in the day. It's the reception though that can go on for days. Lot's of food, wine and dancing. Ultimately it all depends on the bride (it's her day) so plan accordingly... just in case.

After the ceremony, the married couple has a crazy celebration with family and friends with dancing, feasting, eating and a huge wedding cake. Many times this goes on till the early hours of the next day.

The Italian culture and Italian weddings are steeped in history and romance.

The more you know about the traditions and customs associated with an Italian wedding the more fun you'll have at the wedding and certainly at the reception.
