New Jersey - State Divorce Records

By Claire Dowell

The Freedom of Information Act has mandated the local government of all states, including New Jersey, to open the public documents of the state to its local residents. This has given the residents freedom to obtain or access their personal files, including New Jersey divorce records, for them to use it anytime.

Divorce records are requested for several reasons. It is one of the documents used as reference when checking the marital status of an individual. Mostly, the ones who do such things are people who question their partner's status. These people want to make sure that their partners are really single as they claimed they were. By doing so, they can proceed with marriage, if they have plans, smoothly. Also, divorce records are one of the files used in genealogy research, although it is the last document that is being checked. It does not have enough information that could complete or satisfy a thorough research on the family tree.

As the name implies a divorce record would contain information about the separation of a married couple. The date and the place where the divorce was finalized and legalized can be found on the file. Unfortunately, the reason as to why the couple decided to separate is kept away from the public document along with the division of assets and properties. This is done to protect the couple's privacy.

When planning to get a copy of a divorce certificate in New Jersey, one has to send an application form to the office of the Clerk of the Supreme Court. It would help hasten the search if all information needed is carefully documented on the application letter. One needs to provide the names of the couple as well as the place and the date of the separation. One also has to indicate why the document is being requested.

Requesting for a divorce record in New Jersey entails a certain charge. It only cost $10 for the retrieval fee. The payment has to be enclosed on the mail order in the form of a check or a money order. Retrieval of the record would usually take a minimum of 10 days to a maximum of 4 months.

The Internet has helped lessen the wait time by allowing users to obtain the document in just s few seconds. Also, there is no need to send a mail order or go to the office just to file the request since it can be easily done even at one's home. Free divorce records online is also made possible with websites that allow their users to have a feel of their system. This helps users to decide whether they should proceed with the paid service or not.
