By Kerry Ross

Doctors are probably the most looked up to individuals in the society to today. They are smart, successful, a problem solver rather than a help seeker. They are a bunch of well trained individuals that perhaps belong to the upper class of the society. To most people they can do no wrong. Most of that maybe true, however just like anyone else doctors have their own problems, fears, insecurities and sometimes their success goes too much in their head that personal relationship and patient relationships can be strained. Should you have similar problems, then physician coaching might be of great help.

Doctors are trained among other things but the proper way to handle failures, challenges and frustration. They might expertly come up with a diagnosis for their patients but most of them may not be able to diagnose their biggest problems and fears. Sometimes these feelings are always shut out at the back of their mind and compensate through their work.

Ironically though, doctors were believed to be in the leadership roles. These skills needed to be taught, learned and practiced. The lack of knowledge and skills on such area may result to more conflict and less efficient work and personal relationship. Coaching is about guiding or assisting a doctor to see the issues and things in front of them which they were not aware before.

To start with, this activity is actually a partnership between the coach and a client on a creative and thought provoking process which aims to inspire the client in particular, to maximize his professional and personal potential. During the activity, the coach will assist their client to achieve the life and career change that he or she most desires.

Coaching is actually a form of partnership of both the coach and his client, and in this particular situation a doctor, as any professional could actually get one. The activity inspires one to maximize their potential both professionally and personally through a creative and thought provoking process. It helps doctors to take time and for once assess themselves.

Indeed, behind the big success, there lies frustrations, fears and sometimes unexplainable unhappiness. This is where coaches comes in, but keep in mind that such practice is not psychotherapy, in fact there is a very big difference between the two. While psychotherapy focuses on psychopathology, diagnoses and treatment, this practice focuses to another.

The ultimate goal of such activity is to help the doctors who have lost the joy an passion for their work, that is affecting both their professional performance and personal lives. The activity strives to renew the passion that the doctor once had for his profession or better yet rekindle the joy they had once, for their work.

Such activity can be done either by the phone or traditionally, in person. Expect to hit some rough parts during the whole activity, as being honest and vulnerable always is. However, you can expect to be a better person and better doctor a well after the activity.

Physician coaching is a relationship built on openness, trust, willingness to face challenges. Common results of such activity is improved working relationships with clients and peers, increased teamwork, increased productivity and remarkable return of investments. Sometimes an organization or institution can launch this program and perhaps increase patient satisfaction on your facility.
