Peak temperature is reached when the air in the cylinder is fully compressed. A specified amount of fuel is injected in mist form which allows for easy ignition. Upon ignition an explosion occurs which drives the piston downward, thus achieving the power stroke. The cycle is then completed when the piston moves upward while the exhaust valves are opened. This action forces the exhaust gas from the cylinder, and in so doing completes the exhaust stroke.

The four stroke engine takes two upward and two downward piston movements to complete its cycle, while the two stroke version take one upward and one downward for its completion. Every downward movement is a combination of the power and induction, while the upward action, combine the compression and exhaust stroke. Inlet and exhaust ports are strategically placed in the cylinder liners and a blower is incorporated. As soon as the piston clears the inlet port on its way down, a fresh charge of air is blown into the cylinder by the blower in preparation for the next cycle.

In an effort to maximise output, four stroke diesel engines are fitted with a turbocharger. Exhaust gas from the engine is used to drive this machinery that also incorporates a compressor. The compressor forces air into the cylinder during the induction stroke, thereby increasing its air intake. A four stroke engine that is not turbocharged is said to be naturally aspirated. This system depend on the piston downward movement, along with the opening of the inlet valves for a fresh charge of air during the induction stroke.
