This Dad Can't Be "Stupid" About His Amlodipine

By B. Gregory Sloan

When we found ourselves in the stage of our lives where we were bringing up young offspring, our three youngsters weren't allowed to use the big "S" word. No sir, the big "S" word was not allowed in our home. Our children weren't given permission to call one another or anyone else-"stupid." Yes, one may well consider that there are a lot of egregious types of words that need to be prohibited in a family unit before that particular one, and there were, but "stupid" was certainly one that wasn't allowed.

So, that's one reason that I started thinking about that particular word in terms of my own personal way of life and discipline routines a a week or so ago. At the age of 54, there are a few prescription medications that I have to take as needed. That being said, the very most important one, the medication that I am instructed to take every day, is the medication that I am the most likely to overlook. The medication is called Amlodipine, which is given for hypertension(high blood pressure).

Here's the deal with me. My degree of high blood pressure is not incredibly high, or in the typical "danger zone," however, for the "Silent Killer' that we now understand high blood pressure to be, it's nothing short of "stupid" for me to fail to put a very high priority on swallowing that tiny capsule to make certain that my BP levels continue to be at a level of safety. Hypertension can certainly be the cause of many dreadful things, including stroke, heart attack, and much more. We simply can't play around with it.

So, why am I more apt to forget the amlodipine than the other meds? Well, those hypertension symptoms are not crying out. I have an aggravating disc condition in my lower back for which I take prescription medication, and when it acts up, it truly lets me know. But, this is not necessarily so with my high blood pressure. It's quite a sneaky rascal. With many diseases, the warning signs are certainly going to scream to you that it is the appropriate time for your medication. But nope, my hypertension doesn't pull on my coat sleeve and remind me.

So, duh ... stupid me. How hard would it be to put a reminder on my iPhone or something like I would do for many other critical responsibilities? That way I won't fail to remember that extremely important medication. It just isn't that difficult! But, it's super important.

So, okay, I still hope that my kids don't call each other stupid. However, this is certainly one case in point in which I believe their dad has pretty well fallen into that category occasionally. High blood pressure is dangerous. Let's follow our physicians' directions and do the deal. Let's save our lives.
