Interesting Facts About The MK 262 Mod 1

By Mallory Goodwin

Gun and ammunition fans know full well that the public only have admission to the best military weaponry in certain situations. It is only when the military weaponry becomes excess and the army is done with it that it becomes available to the public. This is evident when Korea-era packs and M1 carbines are taken into consideration. MK 262 Mod 1 has altered this trend as it is equally accessible to the public and the military alike.

This ammunition played a supporting role in the triumph of the U. S. Army over their counterparts from Iraq in the Iraqi war. As a result of the criticism aimed towards the 5.56X45 these bullets have been deemed as the perfect replacement as the bullet of choice. It proved itself to be just that due to its greater accuracy and ability to cover a wider range.

Standard M855 bullets were deemed to be inapt due to its inaccuracy. A new bullet with greater accuracy and that was able to cover a wider range was thus required. Ideally, a bullet whose ballistic coefficient was higher was needed. This had to be developed and designed to make up for the flaws of lesser ammunition.

A lot of work went into the design and development of this bullet. Initially, a number of bullets were used. This included the 73-grain Berger and the 77-grain Sierra MatchKing. Developers eventually decided on the Sierra MatchKing. In an attempt to increase accuracy a cannelure was placed on the bullet.

While the ammunition was essentially designed for distance shooting it showed that it could be used with great success over shorter ranges too. Due to this, military officials who used short range weaponry resorted to stealing their colleagues' bullets who was supposed to use it in their long range rifles. The fact that it was preferred by both soldiers who made use of long and short range weapons meant that more ammunition of this kind had to be procured.

Its lethality count can be considered as a key reason for its popularity. Hollow points on the bullets enable it to tear through armor. This ability has seen these bullets nicknamed "Penetrators". Anyone without armor who comes in these bullets' line of fire is sure to be killed.

Its popularity can be attributed to its high lethality number. Its hollow point allows for it to pierce through armor hence its nickname the "Penetrator". Unarmored enemies are taken care of with much ease. While this ammunition is very lethal it provides a quick kill and does not put its victim under any "undue suffering", one of the prescripts indicated by the Hague Conventions with regard to ammunition.

The edge that it has over other ammunition combined with the fact that it is simultaneously accessible to both the public and military makes these bullets the preferred ones to have. Its superior range together with its greater accuracy ensures an enjoyable shooting experience. It can thus safely be said that the greatest of them all is a MK 262 Mod 1.
